Crack Sealing

Crack Sealing is a preventative pavement maintenance practice designed to preserve and extend the service life of asphalt and concrete surfaces. The process involves cleaning and filling existing cracks with a hot-applied, rubberized sealant that bonds to the pavement and accommodates its natural expansion and contraction.

The Importance of Crack Sealing:

  • Moisture Protection: By sealing surface cracks, water infiltration into the underlying base layers is prevented, reducing the risk of subgrade weakening, pothole formation, and structural failure.

  • Extended Service Life: Crack sealing significantly slows pavement deterioration, maximizing the return on infrastructure investment and delaying the need for costly rehabilitation or reconstruction.

  • Cost Efficiency: As one of the most effective and economical pavement preservation techniques, crack sealing lowers life-cycle maintenance costs and helps agencies manage budgets more effectively.

  • Improved Performance: Well-sealed pavement maintains a smoother driving surface, reduces edge deterioration, and enhances overall road safety.

  • Asset Preservation: Regular sealing protects the integrity and appearance of roadways, highways, and parking facilities, supporting long-term performance standards.

Traffic Signal Loops

Traffic Signal Loops (also known as inductive loop detectors) are in-ground sensors installed beneath the pavement surface at intersections, freeways, and freeway ramps to detect the presence of vehicles. These loops consist of insulated wire embedded in the roadway and connected to the traffic signal controller. When a vehicle passes over or stops on the loop, the metal in the vehicle alters the loop’s inductance, triggering a signal that informs the controller of the vehicle’s presence.

The Importance of Traffic Signal Loops:

  • Efficient Traffic Management: Loops provide real-time data that allow signal systems to adjust timing, reduce delays, and optimize traffic flow.

  • Improved Safety: By detecting waiting vehicles, loops ensure timely signal changes, reducing the risk of red-light running or congestion-related accidents.

  • Cost-Effective Technology: As a proven and durable detection method, loop systems are reliable, relatively low-maintenance, and more economical compared to advanced detection alternatives.

  • Adaptive Control: Traffic signal loops integrate with intelligent traffic systems, enabling responsive signal timing based on actual roadway demand.

  • Enhanced Infrastructure Performance: Accurate vehicle detection supports smoother operations at intersections, lowers emissions by reducing idle time, and improves driver satisfaction.

Piezo Sensors

Piezoelectric sensors are advanced measurement devices that utilize the piezoelectric effect, a property of certain crystalline and ceramic materials that enables them to generate an electrical charge in response to applied mechanical stress. These sensors are designed to convert force, pressure, vibration, or acceleration into precise electrical signals, making them highly effective for dynamic monitoring applications.

The Importance of Piezo Sensors:

  • High Sensitivity and Accuracy – Piezoelectric sensors provide accurate, real-time data, even under rapidly changing conditions, which is critical in industries where precision and reliability are paramount.

  • Structural Health Monitoring – In transportation and infrastructure, they are widely used to assess loads, detect stress concentrations, and monitor vibration patterns in pavements, bridges, and other structures to ensure long-term safety and performance.

  • Traffic and Transportation Systems – These sensors play a key role in vehicle detection, traffic signal control, and weigh-in-motion systems, enabling efficient roadway management and data-driven decision-making.

  • Durability and Reliability – With no moving parts and resistance to harsh environmental conditions, piezoelectric sensors are exceptionally durable, making them suitable for long-term use in demanding field applications.

  • Cross-Industry Utility – Beyond infrastructure, they are essential in aerospace, automotive, energy, medical imaging, and consumer electronics, where real-time measurement and feedback systems are critical.

Joint Sealing

Joint Sealing is a critical pavement preservation practice that involves filling and sealing the joints in concrete pavement with a flexible, durable sealant. Joints are intentionally designed gaps that allow concrete slabs to expand and contract with temperature fluctuations. Without proper sealing, these joints can allow water, debris, and incompressible materials to penetrate the pavement structure, accelerating deterioration and reducing service life.

The Importance of Joint Sealing:

  • Moisture Protection: Sealed joints prevent water infiltration, protecting the pavement foundation and minimizing freeze–thaw damage.

  • Extended Service Life: Proper joint sealing reduces spalling, faulting, and premature cracking, prolonging the functional life of the pavement.

  • Cost Efficiency: As a proactive maintenance strategy, joint sealing lowers life-cycle costs by delaying major repairs or reconstruction.

  • Improved Performance: Well-maintained joints support smoother ride quality, reduced maintenance frequency, and enhanced roadway safety.

  • Asset Preservation: Joint sealing safeguards infrastructure investments, ensuring consistent performance of highways, roadways, and concrete surfaces.

Bridge Joint Seal

Bridge Joint Seals are specialized systems designed to protect bridge structures by sealing the expansion and contraction joints between bridge spans or between the bridge deck and adjoining roadway. These seals are engineered to accommodate structural movement caused by temperature changes, traffic loads, and dynamic forces while preventing water, debris, and corrosive materials from infiltrating the bridge substructure.

The Importance of Bridge Joint Seals:

  • Structural Protection: Effective sealing prevents water and de-icing chemicals from reaching steel reinforcements and concrete substructures, reducing corrosion and deterioration.

  • Extended Service Life: By maintaining joint integrity, bridge joint seals significantly extend the lifespan of bridges and reduce the frequency of costly rehabilitation.

  • Safety and Performance: Properly sealed joints ensure smooth transitions for vehicles, enhancing ride quality and minimizing damage to bridge decks.

  • Cost Efficiency: As a proactive maintenance measure, joint sealing helps avoid major structural repairs, lowering long-term maintenance costs.

  • Asset Preservation: Bridge joint seals play a vital role in protecting critical infrastructure, ensuring safe, reliable operation for the traveling public.

Electrical

Electrical System Installation/Modification for streets and highways involves the design, modification, and construction of electrical and lighting infrastructure that supports safe and efficient roadway operations. This work includes installing or upgrading power distribution, underground and overhead wiring, lighting systems, traffic signal wiring, and related components necessary to ensure reliable functionality of public infrastructure.

The Importance of Electrical System:

  • Safety Enhancement: Properly designed and installed lighting improves nighttime visibility, reduces accidents, and promotes pedestrian and driver safety.

  • Operational Reliability: Upgraded electrical systems ensure consistent performance of traffic signals, roadway lighting, and other critical infrastructure components.

  • Energy Efficiency: Modern installations often incorporate LED lighting and advanced controls, reducing energy consumption and long-term operating costs.

  • Infrastructure Modernization: Electrical system improvements support the integration of intelligent transportation systems (ITS), adaptive lighting, and future smart-city technologies.

  • Asset Protection: Quality installation and regular upgrades extend the lifespan of roadway electrical systems, safeguarding public investment in infrastructure.
